MediaTek announced the Helio X30 last summer and we are expecting the first phones with it to come in Q2 2017. Now we hear the Chinese is planning a major jump forward with its next SoC. The new chipset will be made on a 7nm process and will have 12 cores, sources report. The report says that Mediatek and TSMC are working together in bringing an even more efficient chipset to life. The 7nm SoC will have 12 cores, up from 10 in the Helio X30. Despite experiencing unsatisfactory yield rates for TSMC’s 10nm process, Mediatek will keep working together with the Taiwan company for its next-generation SoC.</div>

The BlackBerry DTEK50, which has been officially available for purchase in Canada for nearly a couple of weeks now, can now also be purchased through most of the major carriers in the country.<br />

Bell, Telus, Wind, SaskTel, Rogers, and Videotron are all now selling the Android-powered phone. The no-contract pricing seems to be pretty consistent across the carriers (with almost all of them offering the device for CAD 450), except for Videotron, which is selling the phone for CAD 430.<br />

As most Sony fans are surely aware, the OEM's signature "Z" series has been caught up in an end-of-life crisis for a few days now, with its fate hanging in the balance ever since the MWC introduction of the new X line of handsets.<br />

Today Sony finally issued an official statement on the matter and everything seems clear, but it is definitely not what many would call good news. Short and rather grim, it reads:<br />

The Xperia Z line has reached its culmination – Xperia X series represents a new chapter and evolution of our product strategy. Whilst the Xperia Z series was all about bringing the best of Sony’s advanced technologies to smartphones, Xperia X series is based on bringing smart, adaptive Sony user experiences across camera, battery performance and hardware / software design.<br />
So, it is official - the legendary Z line will be no more, despite our previous expectations of a rich Z6 family. It also sounds like the new X series will be more or less taking its place.<br />
<br />
However, there seems to be yet another grim forecast in the statement. While Sony is clearly attempting to soften the blow with adjectives such as "smart" and "adaptive", the real intention seems to be a new focus on a wider mid-range device lineup.<br />

This can already be seen to some extent in the Xperia X, XA and even the Xperia X Performance, which despite its Snapdragon 820 SoC, powerful camera and most other Sony bells and whistles, still lacks behind the Z5 Premium in the display department. Still, the move could prove a vital step to saving Sony's already struggling mobile business and expanding its market reach. Plus, the first trio of Xperia X devices, might not have mindblowing innovation to offer, but we still found them to be excellent devices in our hands-on review.

octa-core 1.7GHz CPU, and sports a 5.5-inch (1920×1080 pixel resolution)

The updated app now lets you instantly translate printed text between the aforementioned languages. You can use this feature by simply opening the app, clicking on the camera, and pointing it at the printed text you need to translate. You'll see that the translation will happen in real-time.<br />

The update also brings along split view support on compatible iPads, allowing you to use the Google Translate app side-by-side with another app. "So if you’re sending an email or text and need to translate, you can see both apps at the same time. And it even works with text from online books or websites," Google said in a blog post.<br />

The update has begun rolling out for both iOS and Android.<br />

Just yesterday DxOMark added the Huawei Nexus 6P and its camera to its charts, and the new Google phone had some pretty impressive results. It climbed to the No.2 spot in the charts, behind only Samsung's Galaxy S6 edge.<br />

Today though we have a new king of the DxoMark tests when it comes to mobile cameras. And that is the Sony Xperia Z5. According to the experts at DxO Labs, this handset currently has the best mobile camera they've ever tested. With a general score of 87, it's one point above the Galaxy S6 edge, thus snatching the coveted No.1 spot from Samsung's device.<br />

The Nexus 6P therefore drops to third place, while the LG G4 is now fourth. The last in the Top 5 is the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. However, you've probably noticed that a big name is missing - DxOMark hasn't yet tested either of the new iPhones, so things may change again when it does.<br />
<br />
Until that point, Sony can savour this win. According to DxoMark, for photos the Z5 has the best autofocus performance tested to date, very good white balance and color rendering, a good flash with pleasant white balance, good detail preservation regardless of light conditions, and low noise in low-light situations. On the other hand, artifacts are visible with blue sky saturation, and an attenuation is sometimes visible in the corners when using the flash.<br />
<br />
For videos, the camera reportedly has "impressive image stabilization that’s far ahead of the competition", good autofocus, good detail preservation, low noise, and accurate color rendering along with decent white balance. On the flip side, tremors can be visible even when using a tripod, exposure convergence can be very slow, autofocus is slow in low-light, and color shading is present in low-light conditions too.<br />

Verizon has announced a new plan that will allow you to turn in your old iPhone and upgrade to a new one every year. However, only those who purchase Apple's new iPhones - the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus - with the carrier's Device Payment option will be eligible for the upgrade.<br />

Those who've already pre-ordered any of the two new iPhones and elected the Device Payment option are automatically enrolled in this program, Verizon said in a press release, adding that those not willing to upgrade can can pay off the full price of their iPhone in 24 monthly payments.<br />

Sony has a long history of going all out at the annual IFA announcements, but this year it might have just set a new personal record with the Z5 family. After the messy overheating fiasco, involving its last line of flagships, the Japanese tech giant was eager to move on and direct fan attention away from the incident.<br />

Naturally, the Z5 Premium, with its world-first 4K display in a smartphone did the trick. But only a few days after the phone was made official the first accusations started coming in that the flagship isn't exactly 100 percent sincere about its 4K resolution. We looked thoroughly into the issue ASAP and confirmed that all the 8 million or so pixels are indeed there, but still the device's UI was using them only when displaying appropriate UHD media and otherwise running at 1080p.<br />

Sony has finally issues an official statement on the matter, confirming our findings and explaining why the odd behavior was necessary. In the OEM's own words:<br />

Xperia Z5 Premium features a 4K display with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels based on SID Standard and enables all video and image content to be enjoyed in 4K resolution. All other content is displayed at 1080P or lower resolution in order to optimise the performance and battery stamina for this device, ensuring you can enjoy the 4K resolution when you need it most.<br />
Well, there's that mystery solved and when you think about it, a per-need 4K was probably the best way to go. A 5.5 inch UHD display is a wild concept on Sony's part, but the OEM had to be careful not to go overboard with it. The pixels might be there, but the Snapdragon 810 chip inside the device and particularly its Adreno 430 GPU aren't really designed to constantly work to push out such a huge resolution. While the silicon is capable enough of rendering the content, doing it all the time will undoubtedly lead to overheating and a major strain on the battery.<br />
<br />
Sony can't really afford either for obvious reasons and the Z5 Premium is marketed as having up to 2 days of battery life, just like its siblings – the Z5 and Z5 Compact. At the end of the day, this development doesn’t take away Sony's achievement of being first in delivering 4K to the mobile realm, but it is a necessary clarification to put all the allegations at rest.<br />

Apple's new iOS 9 has only been widely available to users for about three days and according to statistics by mixpanel, it already has about 20% adoption rating. That is a truly impressive rate, especially compared to rival Android, which is still dealing with major fragmentation with about 37% Lollipop dissipation and around 38.5% for KitKat and 21.5% still on Jelly Bean.<br />

According to @evleaks, the previously leaked HTC One A9 will feature a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 chipset. The smartphone is expected to make its official debut at the end of this month, on September 29 alongside HTC Butterfly 3.<br />

The rest of the One A9’s specs include 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable memory, 13MP main camera with OIS, and 4MP front-facing snapper. A 5” 1080p AMOLED display, 2,150mAh battery, and fingerprint sensor are also said to be on board.<br />

Google might be prepping a device protection plan similar to Apple's AppleCare one. Android Police has stumbled upon numerous references to "Nexus Protect" on the Play Store, hinting that the search giant might be prepping itself to launch such a program.<br />

It appears that if you dig deep enough int the Play Store, a pop-up notification will appear, informing you the mysterious Nexus Protect is required if you have a couple of different phones in your shopping cart. It's not limited to smartphones, mind you - all types of gadgetry on the Play Store seem to be supported, including Android Wear watches.<br />

"You can’t add this phone unless it has the same Nexus Protect choice as other phones in your cart. You can update your choice or purchase this phone in your next order."<br />

It definitely looks like some kind of extended warranty program for the devices that Google sells on its Play Store. It might be only available to those users that buy specific products that are featured on the store or it could also be region-specific - the unknown variables are one too many.<br />
<br />
At this point, there is not enough data to help us wrap our heads around Nexus Protect and its aspects. If we are to trust our gut feeling, we might suggest that Nexus Protect might make an official appearance on September 29, when Google is expected to unveil the LG-made Nexus 5 (2015) and the Huawei-made Nexus phablet. It is interesting to see how Google will be able to implement such an extended warranty program, but still, have in mind there's always the possibility that it might never become official.<br />

Samsung SDI actually started work on the free-form project in December 2014 and made quick progress with a final version in April and mass-production in August. In a dedicated blog post, Qualcomm announced that the upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset will be up to twice as powerful and energy efficient as its predecessor, Snapdragon 810. The San Diego-based chipmaker has developed the SoC specifically with high-end, ultra-thin devices in mind.<br />

Snapdragon 820 has its cores designed for heterogenous computing. The process allows the chipset combine various cores such as CPU, GPU, and DSP to perform a task, instead of using a single core for it.<br />

Lenovo has unveiled the Vibe S1 smartphone at the ongoing IFA event in Berlin. The main feature of the device is that it comes with two front cameras, something which the company says allows users to give their selfies "a creative twist."<br />

To help you give your selfie a creative touch, there are several built-in photo editing tools. For example, "blur allows refocusing anywhere on the seflie (up to 3 focal plains) or adding a bokeh photo effect to the background to stylize a selfie or simply to get rid of a photo bomber," the company explained in its press release.<br />
