The follow-up to the Moto 360 smartwatch may be lurking around the corner (that's the original Moto 360 in the photo above).
A filing with the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, a key step for all Bluetooth-enabled devices, reveals a new Motorola device with a design model number BTMW03. The reason this points to the Moto 360 is that the original smartwatch first appeared as BTMW01.
Droid Life spotted the filing, which is listed as an “Android device” from Motorola, with support for Bluetooth version 4.1.
The timing is right, as the original Moto 360 was announced in March of last year. Motorola could reveal a successor on its own, or it could be part of the hoopla to come from Google I/O in a couple of weeks.
Why this matters: While reviews were mixed, some of the original Moto 360’s issues may be resolved by the maturation of Android Wear, which gets a lot better with version 5.1. Currently it can only be found on the LG Watch Urbane, but Google says it should start rolling out to other watches soon.
